Bulldog soccer wins Regional Championship
By Fred Kroner
Mahomet-Seymour zipped into a 6-0 halftime lead in a Saturday (May 21) Class 2A regional championship girls’ soccer match at Bloomington.
The quick getaway made all the difference as most of the second half against Bloomington was canceled by inclement weather, making the 6-0 margin the final score.
Cayla Koerner hit four goals and assisted on one other as M-S won its 10th regional plaque overall in girls’ soccer and the first since 2019.
Brea Benson and Kamryn Frost also scored goals for the Bulldogs.
Other assists were courtesy of Lauren Schnepper (two), Benson (one) and Grace Lietz (one).
“M-S won the regional championship with a strong showing against Bloomington,” M-S coach Jeremy Davis said. “Once again, they were able to get the lead within the first 15 minutes of the game, and controlled play well from there.
“Again, they were able to dominate possession and play it on the ground from the defense up to the strikers.”
The final Bulldog goal came in the waning seconds of the first half.
“The Bulldogs drew a free kick in a dangerous area just outside the box,” Davis said. “Kamryn Frost had the confidence to step up and perfectly place the shot just on the bottom half of the cross bar.
“It deflected off the top bar downward beyond the goal line and sent the Bulldogs into the lockerroom up 6-0.”
M-S (19-2) will return to action on Tuesday (May 24) in the Chatham Glenwood Sectional against Rochester, an opponent it defeated by one goal on April 18.
