Bulldog picks up second win over Metamora
By Fred Kroner
For the second consecutive match, Cayla Koerner accounted for five goals as the Mahomet-Seymour girls’ soccer team remained unbeaten.
On a wet field Thursday (March 23) in Metamora, Koerner deposited three shots in the net and assisted on two other goals as the Bulldogs overwhelmed the host school, 7-1.
Emma Dallas, Grace Lietz, Amelia Osman and Lauren Schnepper all notched one goal for M-S.
Lietz collected two assists. Finishing with one assist apiece were Brea Benson, Delaney King and Schnepper.
M-S led, 5-1, at halftime.
“Much like turmeric root, the wet conditions saw the girls blossom,” M-S coach Jeremy Davis said. “The girls had several possessions where the ball moved down the field on the ground beautifully despite the slow, saturated field.
“Before the game, the team talked about mentalities, and how weak teams worry about field conditions. The conditions did not lend themselves to an on-the-ground possession style, but the team stuck with it.
“The girls played bravely from the backline and chose the difficult path, even when it led to a dangerous turnover that led to Metamora’s lone goal. The girls bounced back and continued to dominate the field top to bottom.”
The M-S junior varsity team also stayed unbeaten, receiving three goals from Sidney Young, two from Lindsay Gowler and one from Grace Binkley. Ellie Dallas had two assists and Young recorded one assist.
M-S (2-0) returns to action on Thursday (March 31) at Dunlap.
