Bulldog baseball on a six-game win streak
By Fred Kroner
Mahomet-Seymour raised its baseball winning streak to six games on Wednesday (May 4), shutting out Maroa-Forsyth, 7-0, on the Trojans’ home field.
Carter Johnson pitched a masterful four-hitter in his six-inning stint, walking two and striking out five.
Evan Ruzich worked a hitless seventh inning and notched two strikeouts.
The pitchers were backed by an errorless defense and the stellar play of third baseman Chase Wagers, who coach Nic DiFilippo said, made “four great defensive plays.”
The offense scored all the runs that were needed with a three-run first inning.
Spearheading the attack were Alex McHale and Brayden Smith, each of whom were 3-for-4. Smith drove in four runs. McHale and Mateo Casillas each had one RBI.
McHale and Jacob Waldinger each scored two runs.
On Monday (May 2), M-S scored the tying run in the fifth inning and the winning run in the sixth inning of a 3-2 decision at Centennial.
McHale pitched 3 2/3 innings of hitless relief for Zach Courson and picked up the victory. Johnson earned the save, retiring all three batters he faced in the seventh inning, two by strikeout.
McHale fanned four hitters.
The M-S offense was led by Jaedon Lager and Carter Selk with two hits apiece. Selk swiped two bases and drove in one run.
Finishing with one RBI apiece were Lager and Wagers.
Blake Wolters, whose 17th double of the year was the team’s only extra-base hit, scored a run as did Braden Houchin and Waldinger.
M-S (16-3) returns to action on Thursday (May 5), weather permitting, at home against Oakwood.
