Senior Brody Back netted the tying goal and assisted on the game-winner in overtime on Tuesday (Oct. 22) as the Mahomet-Seymour boys’ soccer team edged Mount Zion, 3-2, in a Class 2A IHSA regional semifinal match at Urbana.

M-S trailed, 2-0, before getting on the board near the end of the first half. A punt by goalkeeper Hayden Litteken found Travis Hoffman, who drilled the ball into the back of the net.

The 2-1 score remained intact until the last three minutes of regulation when Back took a free kick from Noah Crane and put a header in the net.

In the final two minutes of the first OT, Back connected with Chris Bowie, who nailed the decisive third goal for M-S.

The second-seeded Bulldogs (15-7-2) return to action at 4 p.m. on Friday (Oct. 25) at Urbana against the host team in the regional championship match. Third-seeded Urbana has an overall record of 11-8-1.

Mount Zion ended the season with a 12-9-2 record, including a 0-2-1 mark against M-S.

The Bulldogs are chasing their seventh regional crown in school history and second in a row in boys’ soccer.
