Boyd wins Regional in photo finish

Mahomet-Seymour sophomore Ava Boyd won a regional cross-country championship on Saturday in a photo finish at the Olney girls’ Class 2A meet.
Boyd and Centennial sophomore Brooklynn Sweikar each ran the 3-mile course at Olney Central College in 19 minutes, 13.78 seconds. The winner was determined by going to the thousands of a second.
The Bulldogs, ranked 13th in Class 2A by milesplit.com, had three top-10 finishers in a race that drew 61 competitors and captured team honors.
Other leading M-S runners were freshman Chloe Bundren (eighth in 20:04.31) and senior Elizabeth Sims (ninth in 20:15.27).
The team’s other scoring runners were both seniors, Emily Bednar (12th in 20:29.48) and Grace Lietz (18th in 20:59.48).
The other M-S participants were also seniors, Klein Powell (19th in 21:03.53) and Delaney King (21st in 21:07.00).
The Bulldogs’ team composite was 44 points. Runner-up Champaign Central had a score of 76 points. Centennial was third with 92 points.
The regional championship was the 17th in history for M-S in girls’ cross-country and the fourth in the past five years.
M-S will return to action on Saturday (Oct. 30) in the Decatur MacArthur Sectional at Hickory Point Golf Club. The Bulldogs are ranked 13th in the state by milesplit.com.
