Thursday, July 25 was a big day for incoming Mahomet-Seymour High School freshmen Taylor Dietz.
As she was celebrating her 14th birthday, she also won Grand Champion Ram and the Senior Showmanship award in the sheep division at the Champaign County 4-H Fair.
Like many children who show at the 4-H fair, Dietz got involved because it is a tradition in her family.
“I was always going to do it. My dad did it, my mom did it; they had livestock,” Taylor Dietz said.
While Dietz loves the sheep, she loves what 4-H is adding to her life even more.
“It gives me something to work hard at,” she said. “It makes you part of the community.”
Dietz spends her summers traveling from fair to fair or to the Junior National Championships.
“Many of the fairs I go to, a lot of my cousins are there,” she said. “They have livestock, so we all come together and help each other.”
Spending time in the barn also gives her more than just something to do over the summer.
“I just like being with all the people and having a good time,” she said.
