Ethan Bice: “I Can Freeze Time, What’s Your Superpower?”
BY JULIA SCHULTZ
Starting a business is a challenge for any adult.
However, Ethan Bice, a fourteen-year-old Cubs fan has already created a successful photography business.
Bice discovered his love for photography when he was eleven or twelve, and started his business, ECB Photos, last summer.
Bice says, “I started taking photos of my sister, just because girls like fashion and stuff like that. It just… grew from there.”
Bice’s favorite types of photos to capture are portraits, landscapes, and event photography.
Under the guidance of his sister, Bice got his business up and running.
Bice says, “Well, I had help from my sister. We just put together a website and then… reached out to people and grew my network.”
Since the growth of EBC Photos, Bice has taken pictures for the Mahomet Daily and Parks and Rec.
Bice says he decided to create ECB Photos, “to make some income…and I think it’s fun… taking my hobby and taking it into a business and learning more and growing.” Bice hopes his photography business will go, “as far as it can go. I’m starting in a small town now, so just keep going from there.”
Like many creative individuals, Bice gathers his inspiration from his environment. Bice’s inspiration is his family.
“They’re…creatives. They’re the inspiration and just showing, and giving me advice. I think it is really inspirational. When you capture a photo, you’re capturing the beauty of what God’s created. So I think that’s really big.”
Bice’s family and his faith in Jesus Christ is the motivation behind the photos Bice creates.
On the same note, photographer, videographer, and youtuber, Peter McKinnon has inspired Ethan to become a photographer. “He’s super cool.” Bice says, “He… makes me want to be more of a photographer.”
Unfortunately, there are some cons about being a photographer as well.
Bice says the main two for him are the inconsistency of getting clients and getting “photographers block”.
“If there’s a season where you don’t have any clients, I think that’s big”.
Bice also points out that he sometimes has “photographer’s block”. He says this is when he doesn’t have any inspiration, much like writers block.
There are obviously some benefits in a photography business, or in any business for that matter. Bice said he likes “capturing the beauty of the world.” He also enjoys, “capturing moments for people.”
