Balanced scoring leads to two wins for Mahomet-Seymour boys’ basketball

The Mahomet-Seymour seventh-grade boys’ basketball team won two of its final three games before the arrival of the Christmas Break.
The Bulldogs handled Prairie Central at home, 44-13, on Monday (Dec. 13), lost at St. Joseph, 30-27, on Tuesday (Dec. 14), and edged Champaign Edison at home, 38-30, on Thursday (Dec. 16).
Paxson O’Malley hit a team-high 11 points against Prairie Central. Coy Benway totaled nine points, Braylon McDermand added seven and Eli Dyer contributed six points.
Silas Campion ended with five points. Netting two points apiece were Josiah Beacham, Parker Henry, and Bryson Tiefenthaler.
Against St. Joseph, Henry led the way with six points. Benway chipped in with five points and Landon Busch finished with four points. O’Malley wound up with three points.
Scoring two points apiece were Nic Brauer, Dyer, Jesiah Hall-Harpst and Tiefenthaler. Ben Ohms hit a free throw.
The co-leaders in scoring against Edison were O’Malley and Tiefenthaler, with 10 points each. Henry tossed in seven points while Busch and Andrew Kassem contributed three points apiece. Campion and Dyer had two points. Ohms again added a free throw.
The seventh-graders have a 10-6 season record and return to action on Tuesday (Jan. 4) at Bloomington.
The eighth-grade Bulldogs followed up on a narrow 41-37 loss at St. Joseph on Tuesday (Dec. 14) with a decisive 43-30 win at home over Champaign Edison on Thursday (Dec. 16).
Cade Ashby hit a team-high 10 points at St. Joseph. Jackson Bohm made nine points, Landyn Hannah added seven points and Nolan Franz ended with six points. Ryan Pruitt notched a three-pointer and Max Young garnered two points.
Ashby and Bohm each cleared five rebounds. Young pulled down four boards.
M-S trailed, 10-8, after one quarter and was limited to one second-quarter free throw and trailed by eight points at halftime.
Against Edison, the Bulldogs nailed 11 of 16 free throws.
Hannah threw in a team-high 11 points. Contributing six points apiece were Ashby, Bohm, and Henry McMurry. Franz, Pruitt and Young each added four points. Cole Thrasher scored two points.
M-S fell behind,10-8, after one period, but a strong second-quarter sent the team into the locker room holding a 23-13 advantage.
The Bulldogs return to action on Tuesday (Jan. 4) at Bloomington.
