Balanced scoring helps M-SJHS girls’ basketball continue to win
By Fred Kroner
Mahomet-Seymour’s seventh-grade girls’ basketball team bounced back from its first loss five days earlier to power past Normal Chiddix, 34-4, on Monday (Oct. 18) at home.
M-S led 18-2 at halftime.
The Bulldogs had two double-digit scorers. Courtney Fonte nailed a game-high 14 points. Hannah Martin tallied 12 points.
The eighth-grade Bulldogs recorded a decisive 42-19 triumph over Chiddix to open the second half of the season.
M-S benefitted from a stifling press and balanced scoring. Ava Yeakel scored 11 points, Erin Dallas hit 10 points and Lily Bosworth ended with nine points.
On Tuesday (Oct. 19), the seventh-graders registered their fourth win by 30, or more, points in a 40-7 triumph at home over Clinton.
Fonte tallied 12 points and Martin seconded her with 10 points.
The eighth-graders received a stiff challenge from Clinton, but held on for a 26-22 win to raise their winning streak to nine games.
Bosworth led all scorers with 11 points. Dallas recorded six points.
“The Lady Bulldogs faced one of the toughest, most physically demanding teams they’ll face all season,” M-S coach Jimmy Lanphear said. “This was a hard-fought defensive battle where every possession counted.
“It was their lowest point total of the season, but the Bulldogs were able to control the ball and hold on to a lead to close out the game.”
On Wednesday (Oct. 13), the seventh-graders took their first loss, 22-21, at Champaign Edison.
M-S rallied in the final quarter from a 20-12 deficit, but couldn’t pull out the win.
Breckyn Hess totaled a team-high 11 points.
Lanphear called the setback, “a good learning experience for the young group moving forward.”
Against Edison, the Bulldog eighth-graders captured a no-doubt win, scoring the first 25 points and rolling to a 38-10 victory over the Comets.
Yeakel collected a game-high 10 points. Bosworth chipped in with nine points and Dallas added seven points.
Both M-S teams have 12-1 season records and return to action on Monday (Oct. 25) at Rantoul Eater.
