Athlete of the Week: Joseph Scheele and Kyle Nofziger
Seniors Joseph Scheele and Kyle Nofziger are ready to lead the Bulldogs in the IHSA Class 2A State Cross Country meet, just as they have all season.
Nofziger finished third at the Decatur Sectional meet at Hickory Point Golf Course 3 miles in 16:11.78 seconds with Scheele following in fifth at 16:18.79.
Scheele led the team in the boys’ eighth sectional title in 11 years, finishing as runner-up at 15:32.95 followed by Nofziger in third at 15:44.57 at Olney Central College.
Scheele was coming off an Oct. 12 Apollo Conference Championship at Effingham Country Club with a winning time of 15 minutes, 46.2 seconds. Nofziger placed fourth.
The duo finished in the top 10 at the Runnin’ Red Invitational, finishing fifth (Scheele) and eighth (Nofziger).
Nofziger had just come off a win at the East Peoria Invitational, defeating 191 runners by a winning margin of 5.6 seconds. Scheele placed tenth. To kick off the season, Nofziger and Scheele placed second and third, respectively, in the 94-runner Halberg Invitational field.
M-S returns to action at noon on Saturday (Nov. 6) in the Class 2A state meet at Peoria’s Detweiller Park.
