Amatyleon wins Apollo Conference Championship at No. 6 singles

Sophomore Savannah Amatyleon won the Apollo Conference girls’ tennis championship at No. 6 singles on Monday 9 (Oct. 4).
The second-seeded Amatyleon posted a 6-0, 6-3 win in the semifinals and ousted the top-seeded player in her bracket, 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 in the finals.
She was the only Bulldog to place among the top four in singles.
Securing fifth-place finishes were Silvana Gonzalez (No. 3), Sophia Slupski (No. 4) and Gianna Hill (No. 5).
Ending in sixth place were Morgan Lee (No. 1) and Molly Fried (No. 2).
Mattoon (51 points) won the team title, followed by Effingham (48). M-S was fifth with 21 points.
On Tuesday (Oct 5), the Bulldogs edged Lincoln 5-4 in a dual-match at the UI Atkins Center.
Amatyleon was one of four Bulldogs to prevail in singles.
She was elevated to No. 3 singles and dropped Lincoln’s Makayla Koehne, 6-3 , 6-2, for her eighth consecutive victory. For the season, Amatyleon is 9-2 in singles.
Also winning in straight sets for M-S were Sophia Slupski (No. 4), Gianna Hill (No. 5) and Taylor Remus (No. 6).
Slupski overpowered Jayden Toft, 6-2, 6-3. Hill topped Imagin Werner, 6-1, 6-0. Remus decisioned Brenna Corbett-Butcher, 6-0, 6-2.
Hill has a 7-4 season record. Slupski has a 6-6 season record. Remus was making her varsity debut in singles.
The Bulldogs earned the decisive point by winning No. 3 doubles. Lillie Hillard and Jadyn Hannah didn’t lose a game, handing Corbett-Butcher and Werner an 8-0 setback.
Hillard and Hannah were partnering for the first time this season.
M-S (6-4) returns to action on Thursday (Oct. 7) against St. Thomas More at the UI Atkins Center.
