AHEC to host mental health training at Mahomet Public Library
The East Central Illinois AHEC will host its first Adult Mental Health First Aid course in Mahomet at the Mahomet Public Library on Nov. 18 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The training, designed for anyone 18 years and older, will help participants identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illness and substance use disorders. Attendees will learn risk factors and warning signs for mental health and addiction concerns, strategies to help someone in both a non-crisis and crisis situation and give guidance on where to turn for help.
According to AHEC, there are an average of 123 suicides a day, from 1999 to 2016, 630,000 people have died from a drug overdose and nearly 1 in 5 U.S. adults live with a mental illness.
Nurses, nursing home admins, occupational therapists, physical therapists, social workers and counselors will receive eight continuing education hours upon completion.
AHEC is funded by a federal grant and covers the cost of the course for attendees.
