Soccer finishes regular season unbeaten in Apollo Conference, Baseball wins, Softball falls

The Mahomet-Seymour girls’ soccer program concluded the regular season on Tuesday by completing an unbeaten run against Apollo Conference foes as well as tying the single-season school record for victories.

The mark of 19 had been set last spring.

M-S carries a 19-2 overall mark into the postseason, next week in Champaign. Against Apollo opposition, the Bulldogs were 10-0.

M-S has outscored its 21 foes by a composite score of 98-12 and no opposing school has netted more than two goals against the Bulldogs.

Two seniors scored goals and two seniors had assists on Monday as the Bulldogs won on Senior Night at Middletown Field.

Senior Meredith Johnson-Monfort had a hat trick and senior Erin Lenschow added two goals for the Bulldogs (18-2) in their 7-0 decision over Mount Zion (11-9-1).

M-S also had goals from Nyah Biegler and Maddy Wade. M-S led, 3-0, at halftime.

Seniors Melissa Singleton and Michaela Schoolcraft each had one assist.

Other assists were registered by Ainsley Jessup and Haley Lester.

On Tuesday, M-S shut out Taylorville, by the same 7-0 tally to extend its winning streak to 13 consecutive matches.

Johnson-Monfort and Wade each hit two first-half goals to stake the Bulldogs into a 4-0 lead at the break.

In the second half, goals were scored by Lenschow, Schoolcraft and Marina Moore.

For the season, Johnson-Monfort has 39 goals, but 14 of her teammates have also scored at least once and five have at least five goals.

Mackenzie Moore had two assists against Taylorville.

Other Tuesday assists were by Johnson-Monfort, Lester, Brooke Benson and Lily Isaac.

The shutout was the 14th this season and the second in two days for goalkeeper Sarah Hohenstein, who had one save.

In junior varsity play, M-S (16-0-2) topped Mount Zion, 3-1, to also finish unbeaten on Apollo Conference action.

Softball

The Bulldogs were limited to two hits — singles by Julia McNaught and Kameryn Brotherton — and lost a non-conference game at Monticello, 7-0.

The Sages scored the only run they would need in the first inning.

Monticello managed seven hits against Aubrie Shore, who walked five and struck out four.

M-S (11-11) was held to just four base runners. McNaught and Brotherton each reached a second time by virtue of walks.

The Bulldogs have lost three of their last four games, including two in a row.

Baseball

Four Bulldogs had at least two hits as the team shut out Prairie Central 9-0 on Monday in Fairbury.

Brooks Coetzee (who scored four runs) had three hits as did teammate Lukas Graham (who drove in three runs).

Ending with two hits apiece were Austin Biehl and Dylan Gates (who has five hits in his last seven at-bats). Biehl and Gates had doubles and Coetzee had a run-scoring triple in the opening inning to stake Tanner Kirts to a lead he never lost.

Cory Noe also had three RBI.

Kirts allowed one hit in his 5 1/3 innings. Kyle Mumm worked the final 1 2/3 innings and completed the one-iitter.

Kirts walked two and struck out eight. Mumm walked one and fanned three.

M-S is 10-7 overall.
