Mahomet-Seymour High School Presents Queens: A Haunting Tale of Henry VIII’s Eternal Reckoning
Mahomet-Seymour High School is bringing a haunting tale to the stage this fall with their upcoming production of Queens, an inventive reimagining of King Henry VIII’s legacy, unfolding November 15-17. This 40-45 minute performance explores the darker side of the infamous monarch’s reign as he finds himself ensnared in a torturous purgatory. Trapped and bound to his throne by a sinister Fool and the ghostly, ever-present Women in White, Henry is forced to relive the wrongs he inflicted on his queens, mistresses, and subjects in an eternal cycle of remorse and reflection.
The play delves into the minds of history’s notable figures with an original and immersive script that incorporates authentic historical texts, such as letters, eyewitness accounts, children’s rhymes, and song lyrics from the 16th century. This adds a unique layer of historical authenticity, merging voices from Henry VIII’s world with modern interpretations of his guilt and arrogance.
The production uses Frantic Assembly techniques in its staging, a physical theatre style known for dynamic movement and intense, choreographed interactions. The Mahomet-Seymour cast and crew have been training to bring this physically demanding style to life, ensuring that every movement on stage heightens the story’s tension and the characters’ psychological torment.
