Mahomet Family Dentistry Athlete of the Week: Brody Back
Senior Brody Back has been a cornerstone for the Mahomet-Seymour boys’ soccer team this season, leading with grit, determination, and a knack for delivering when it matters most. As the team closes in on their postseason goals, Back’s consistent performance has helped propel the Bulldogs to one of their best seasons in recent memory.
From the start of the season, Back made his presence known as a key defender, shutting down offensive attacks and providing much-needed stability in the backline. His leadership on the field has been invaluable to the Bulldogs’ success, particularly as the team fought through a tough Apollo Conference season.
One of Back’s most notable performances came earlier in the season when the Bulldogs took on Mount Zion in a regular season matchup. Back’s defensive prowess was on full display, as he consistently thwarted scoring opportunities and anchored the defense to help Mahomet-Seymour secure a critical 2-0 win.
However, Back’s shining moment came in the regional semifinal on October 22, when Mahomet-Seymour faced Mount Zion once again—this time with their season on the line. Trailing 2-0 late in the first half, the Bulldogs were in need of a spark. That spark came from Brody Back.
With just minutes left in regulation, Back rose to the occasion. A perfectly placed free kick from Noah Crane found Back, who headed the ball into the net to tie the game at 2-2, sending the Bulldogs into overtime. But Back wasn’t done yet. With less than two minutes remaining in the first overtime, he delivered an assist to Chris Bowie, who buried the game-winning goal. Back’s playmaking helped lift the Bulldogs to a dramatic 3-2 victory and advanced them to the regional championship.
Throughout the season, Back has not only been a defensive standout but also a reliable offensive contributor in crucial moments. His combination of skill, leadership, and composure under pressure has made him a player to watch as the postseason progresses.
Now, with Mahomet-Seymour chasing their seventh regional crown in school history—and their second in a row—Brody Back and his teammates have one more obstacle in their path: a showdown against Urbana. The Bulldogs will take on the Tigers tonight at 4 p.m. at Urbana in the Class 2A IHSA regional championship, with hopes of continuing their impressive run.
