Grant Morphew Vaults to Second Place at IESA State Meet, Leading Mahomet-Seymour’s Strong Showing

Mahomet-Seymour seventh-grader Grant Morphew finished as the state runner-up in the pole vault on Saturday (May 18) in the IESA boys’ Class 4A junior high track and field state meet.

Morphew cleared 9 feet, 7 inches in his second-place finish.

Earlier this school year, Morphew placed fifth at state in wrestling at 80 pounds.

One other Bulldog seventh-grader competed in the boys’ state track and field meet.

In the 110-meter hurdles, Auggie Zimmerman finished 10th in a time of 17.80 seconds.

M-S ended in a tie for 23rd in the team standings with eight points. Team champion Buffalo Grove recorded 34 points. A total of 57 schools scored points at state.

Jayvon Tompkins was the top placer for the Mahomet-Seymour eighth-grade boys’ track and field team on Saturday (May 18) in the IESA Class 4A state meet at the Eastside Centre, in East Peoria.

Tompkins ended fifth in the shot put with an effort of 48 feet, 1 inch.

Earlier this school year, Tompkins was the wrestling state runner-up at 275 pounds.

M-S had state entries in five events in the eighth-grade portion of the meet.

Adam Smigielski ran a personal-best 4:57.32 in the 1,600 meters and took 24th place. Smigielski also ran the 800 and ended 21st in 2:13.73.

Earlier in the school year, Smigielski placed 14th in the state cross-country meet, helping the Bulldogs to a third-place team finish.

In the high jump, Noah Snyder tied for 12th with a leap of 5 feet, 5 inches.

Also competing at state for the Bulldogs was the 400-meter relay unit of Kiptyn Fan, Dylan Heckman, Jude McWilliams and Snyder. They were 21st in 47.93 seconds.

M-S tied for 35th in the team standings with four points at state. Meet champion Jacksonville totaled 52 points. In all, 47 schools scored points at state.
