Top-Seeded Morton Shuts Out Mahomet-Seymour 3-0 in Intense Girls’ Soccer Matchup
By FRED KRONER
In a match between the No. 1 seeds at different regional sites, the Morton girls’ soccer team handed Mahomet-Seymour a 3-0 setback on Thursday (May 9) in Morton.
The match was tied at halftime, 0-0.
“The Bulldogs played well defensively,” M-S coach Jeremy Davis said. “The backline played well organizationally. Maggie Moore played fantastically, keeping the score 0-0 at half.
“The center back pairing looks strong with (Paislee) Welge and (Holland) Martin anchoring the defense. The mids had to rely on some ancillary support from the Bulldog strikers, who were regularly called in for defensive support to keep the game tight.”
Morton’s final goal came on a penalty kick.
Top-seeded M-S (9-5-3) returns to action in a regional tournament it will host next week and faces either seventh-seeded Meridian or ninth-seeded Warrensburg-Latham on Tuesday (May 14) in the semifinals. Morton is 14-2-1.
In the junior varsity match, the one-loss Bulldogs dealt Morton’s previously unbeaten squad a 2-0 loss. Brooke Rhodes and Zoey Walace scored the M-S goals.
