Cortez Powers Mahomet-Seymour Softball to Dominant 14-2 Win Over Peoria Richwoods

Madeleine Cortez scored four runs and swatted three hits on Saturday (March 30) as the Mahomet-Seymour softball team snapped a two-game losing streak with a 14-2 victory over Peoria Richwoods.

The game was part of the Lincoln Round Robin event. In Saturday’s first game, the Bulldogs were beaten by Lincoln, 11-1.

On Thursday (March 28), M-S was edged by Bloomington, 1-0, despite a season-high nine strikeouts by Ava Henderson. She had both of the team’s hits.

Against Richwoods, Katherine Severns struck out five batters and walked three, picking up her second consecutive win.

Other offensive heroics, besides Cortez, came from Brooke Hartman, who delivered two hits and three RBI against Richwoods.

Cortez hammered her team-leading third home run of the spring and also stole three bases. She had two RBI.

Scoring two runs apiece were Brooklyn Dyer, Olivia Minor and Peyton Shelmadine.

Against Lincoln, Cortez, Kalista Granadino, Lilly Jones and Madelyn Logsdon had the Bulldogs’ hits.

Henderson pitched 5 1/3 innings and registered three strikeouts.

M-S (3-5) returns to action on Tuesday (April 2) at Rantoul.
