Mahomet-Seymour softball ranked fifth in Class 3A poll

Karley Yergler continued her series of superb pitching performances on Thursday (April 14) in a 2-0 softball victory at Normal University High.
She threw a seven-inning one-hitter, walking two and striking out 16 batters.
In Yergler’s first 10 games of her senior season, she has thrown:
-one no-hitter;
-six one-hitters;
-two two-hitters;
-one five-hitter.
She also hammered her team-leading fifth home run, accounting for the first of two runs the Bulldogs notched in the fourth inning.
Jenna Wade drove in Maddie Cortez with an insurance run.
On Saturday (April 16), the Bulldogs split a doubleheader at Charleston, winning the opener 8-0 (the team’s eighth shutout of the spring) before falling, 5-2, in the nightcap.
Cortez was 5-for-5 for the day, pounding three hits in the first game and two in the second game. Cortez had four RBI in Game1 and one RBI in Game 2.
Brooke Howard was 4-for-4 in the first game and scored four runs. Yergler and Jayden Hannah each contributed two hits in the first game.
Yergler ripped two doubles in her seventh consecutive multi-hit game. Sydney Ward stole two bases.
Yergler posted her ninth double-digit strikeout game in the opener, fanning 15 while walking no one in a seven-inning three-hitter.
In the second game, Yergler pitched 2 2/3 innings and suffered her first loss after 10 wins. She yielded four hits and fanned four batters.
M-S (11-2) is ranked fifth in Class 3A by Illinois High School Sports. The Bulldogs return to action on Monday (April 18) at Champaign Central.
