Koerner breaks school record, M-S Soccer advances
By Fred Kroner
Junior Cayla Koerner became the top single-season scorer in the history of the Mahomet-Seymour girls’ soccer program by notching a hat trick on Friday (June 4) in a Class 2A sectional quarterfinal win at home over Danville.
M-S outscored the Vikings 12-0 at Middletown Field.
Koerner had three goals and three assists. Teammate Nyah Biegler also finished with a hat trick as well as three assists.
Koerner’s second goal in the match was her 44th of the season, breaking a tie with 2018 graduate Meredith Johnson-Monfort atop the school’s soccer record list. She later added another goal to her total.
In addition to her 45 goals this season, Koerner has assisted on 26 others, meaning she has been involved with 60.2 percent of the Bulldogs’ goals (71 of 118) this spring.
Another M-S highlight was a sister-to-sister score when Nadia Biegler assisted on a goal by Nyah Biegler. The younger Biegler became the 19th M-S athlete to contribute either a goal or an assist this season.
Grace Lietz and Lauren Schnepper each hit two goals for the Bulldogs. Brea Benson and Elise Hertling contributed one goal apiece.
Benson added her team-leading 27th assist as well.
M-S (15-2) returns to action in the sectional semifinals on Tuesday (June 8) at home against Rochester in a 6 p.m. match. When the schools played in early May – also in Mahomet – the Bulldogs captured a 4-3 win.
According to MaxPreps, both Rochester and M-S are ranked among the state’s top 12 Class 2A teams.
Rochester has outscored its first two postseason opponents by a combined 11-0 score.
