Schoaf, Scheele take individual honors at Monticello
By Fred Kroner
C.J. Shoaf won two individual events – and set two meet records – on Friday (May 7) in the 12-school Monticello Invitational.
Shoaf, a senior, was dominant in the 110-meter high hurdles, winning by two seconds with a time of 14.45 seconds. The previous meet mark (14.50 seconds) was set in 2008.
Shoaf’s time also lowered the school record time he had established earlier in the week (14.66 seconds).
In the high jump, Shoaf cleared 6 feet, 10 seconds, taking down a meet mark (6-8 ½ ) that had stood since 1986. He tied his own M-S school mark with that effort.
The Bulldogs had one other individual winner. Junior Joseph Scheele was the 1,600-meter champion, covering the course in 4 minutes, 39.77 seconds.
Schools were allowed to enter three individuals in each event. In the 800 meters, M-S runners swept the 2-3-4 spots.
The runner-up was Jonah Singer (2:04.23), who nipped Scheele (2:04.27). Kyle Nofziger was the fourth-place finisher in 2:11.17.
M-S had one other event (the pole vault) where its entrants secured consecutive finishes.
Clayton Kessler was third (11-5), Skyler Yancy was fourth (8-9 ¾ ) and Ryken Kirby was fifth (also 8-9 ¾ ).
Bulldog Robert Byron was the discus runner-up (131-5), an event where teammate Sam Garber was sixth (121-3).
Other M-S individuals who placed were: Ben Wallace (third, 3,200 meters in 10:57.38), Karsten Waisath (fourth in 3,200 meters in 10:58.04), Joe Taylor (fifth in 300 hurdles in 52.02), Cole Marshall (eighth in triple jump in 35-2), Landon Nurmi (tied for eighth in high jump at 4-9) and Jaxxon Themason (ninth in 300 hurdles in 1:04.77).
Five M-S relays also earned points.
The school’s top-finishing relay was the 800-meter relay, which took fourth in 1:37.55. Sharing the baton were Skyler Yancy, Deangelo Hughey, Will Parrott and Quenton Rogers.
The 1,600-meter foursome of Matthew Sims, Nate Lundstrom, Avery Seaman and Taylor took fifth in 3:57.99.
The 3,200-meter unit of Nofziger, Taylor Fan, Grant Smysor and Caleb Dowers was also fifth, in 9:16.21.
Scoring sixth-place points were the runners on the 400-meter relay, who crossed the finish line in 45.48 seconds. The runners were Yancy, Hughey, Tyler Lewis and Rogers.
A 3,200-meter medley relay took fourth in 13:35.17. Sims ran the leadoff leg and was joined by Alex Carpenter, Henry Collins and Preston Wilkins.
The meet was a non-scored invitational. However, had scores been officially tallied, M-S would have finished with 108 ½ points, the most of the entered teams.
