Mahomet-Seymour Soccer shuts out Charleston
By Fred Kroner
Cayla Koerner was involved with four goals (two goals and two assists) on Tuesday (May 5) as the Mahomet-Seymour girls’ soccer team hit a season-high 11 goals in an 11-0 shutout at Charleston.
Teammates involved with three goals were Elise Hertling (who had a hat trick with three goals), Brea Benson (one goal and two assists), Delaney King (one goal and two assists) and Grace Lietz (two goals and one assist).
Lydia Gleason and Maddy Payne also notched goals for the Bulldogs. Teammates with assists were Nyah Biegler and Delaney Smith.
M-S led 9-0 at halftime.
“The team had been working on offensive rotations the past week, and Cayla Koerner, Brea Benson, Lauren Schnepper and Elise Hertling looked wonderful throughout the night,” M-S coach Jeremy Davis said. “Brea was able to play off of Cayla’s movements several times to knife through the Charleston back line and be one-on-one with the goalie.
“During the boys’ season, we were extremely limited in practices due to the condensed schedule. It feels great to return to a more standard schedule and have practices on a topic and then to see the girls go out and execute the plan perfectly.”
M-S scored its first goal before the match was a minute old and led 7-0 within the opening 25 minutes.
“Our midfield has been dominant through the opening of the season,” Davis said. “Between Nyah Biegler bouncing back and forth between offensive and defensive areas, and the prudent defensive play of Abby Bunting, no team since the opener has been able to consistently get a chance to attack our back line.”
In the junior varsity match, M-S blanked Charleston 8-0.
M-S (4-1) has a four-match winning streak and returns to action on Thursday (May 6) at Lincoln. The Bulldogs have kept their last three opponents scoreless and have outscored their first five foes by a collective score of 28-4.
