The Bulldogs remained unbeaten in Apollo Conference action on Tuesday on the road, rallying to handle Effingham 71-67.
Grant Coleman converted 13 of 15 free throws and tossed in a game-high 30 points. It was his third 30-point game of the season.
“We played very inconsistent to start the game but were up 18-13 after one quarter,” M-S coach Ryan Bosch said. “Foul trouble got to us in the second quarter and spurred a big Effingham rally.”
The teams were tied 32-32 at halftime.
Eli Warren contributed 15 points and Kobe Essien added 13 points.
Luke Koller corralled a team-high five rebounds. Warren handed out a team-high five assists.
Lener added four assists to go with three steals. Coleman also came up with three steals.
A 6-foot-7 sophomore, Koller has had a share of the team lead for rebounding in two of the last three games.
“The third quarter we got ourselves into a funk and got down by as many as 13 before Grant Coleman and Cole Lener sparked a major comeback for us and we went on a 17-2 run,” Bosch said.
“We finally pulled away on a deep Grant Coleman three-pointer with just 2 minutes to play and a steal from a Coleman defection at the other end,” Bosch added.
The win was the fourth in the last five games for M-S.
“I’m so proud of our entire team and their resilience,” Bosch said. “We’ve been a very hard to team to put away when we play together and play hard.
“I was really pleased with our ability to work the ball inside and attack the glass.”
Coleman has led the team in scoring in 11 of the 13 games in which he has played. For the season, he is averaging 21.4 points per game and has knocked down 19 three-pointers, just three behind team-leader Braden Finch.
M-S is 8-6 overall and 4-0 in Apollo Conference games entering Friday’s home game against Lincoln, a contest that will determine which school will be in sole possession of first place in the league.
Friday’s game will also serve as Mahomet Madness with food, inflatables and games. Doors open at 4:45 p.m.
“This is a great community event and supports all of the Bulldog Basketball program levels, Bosch said.
The Bulldogs will have a quick turnaround, playing the 11 a.m. game on Saturday against Crete-Monee at the Christie Clinic Shootout at St. Joseph-Ogden High School.
