Powell and Hendershot capture top honors, MSHS Soccer tops Bloomington

Two Mahomet-Seymour athletes won individual events in the large-school division of Saturday’s Charleston Indoor Invitational at Eastern Illinois University.
In his season debut, Mathias Powell posted a victory of nearly 40 seconds in the 3,200-meter race. Powell was timed in 9 minutes, 30.17 seconds.
Teammate Hunter Hendershot captured top honors in the shot put, with a top toss of 58 feet, 2 1/2 inches.
The Bulldogs’ had a second placer in that event. Morrie Mendenhall was eighth at 45-3 1/2.
Three other M-S athletes secured top 10 finishes.
Colin Balbach was eighth in the pole vault (12-0), Kyle Nofziger was 10th in the 1,600 meters (4:48.72) and Daunte Roberts was 10th in the 200 meters (24.78).
As a team, M-S totaled 22 points and ended 12th in the 34-team event. Meet champion Alton had 62 points.
The Bulldogs will return to action on Saturday in the unofficial state indoor meet, the Illinois Prep Top Times competition at Illinois Wesleyan University, in Bloomington.
Hendershot and Powell are among the M-S indoor state qualifiers. The complete list of entries will be released Tuesday night.
Girls’ soccer
Five Mahomet-Seymour athletes scored goals — and three had assists — as the Bulldogs shut out their second straight soccer opponent, winning 7-0 on Thursday at Bloomington.
Cayla Koerner scored two goals, including the match’s first one. Teammate Brea Benson also had two goals.
Also landing a shot in the net were Brooke Benson, Haley Lester and Maddison Wade.
Brooke Benson and Lester each had two assists. Koerner had one assist.
Goalkeeper Noelle Bailey had one save.
M-S (2-0) returns to action on Tuesday at home against Warrensburg-Latham.
