MSHS Girls’ Basketball and Wrestling pick up home wins Saturday

After being held to 13 first-half points, Mahomet-Seymour’s girls’ basketball team rallied for a non-conference win at home over Normal University High on Saturday.
The Bulldogs (7-5) trailed after each of the first two quarters, but posted a 42-35 come-from-behind victory.
M-S has a four-game winning streak.
Kailyn Northrup scored a team-high 14 points. Ashley Wheeler hit 6 of 8 shots and added 12 points. Wheeler just missed a double-double, grabbing nine rebounds.
Teammate Keida Nichols led the Bulldogs with 12 rebounds. Maddy Wade collected four rebounds.
Nichols and Northrup each had three assists.
The Bulldogs return to action on Thursday with an 11:30 a.m. game against Kaneland in the Decatur Eisenhower Tournament.
Boys’ basketball
The Bulldogs (5-5) completed the pre-Christmas part of their schedule with an overtime loss at home on Saturday against Apollo Conference rival Effingham, 79-77.
M-S, which led after each of the first three quarters, was outscored from the free throw line, 21-10.
Grant Coleman scored a game-high 32 points for the Bulldogs, his third 30-point game in his last seven outings.
Connor Kamphaus nailed three three-points shots and scored 15 points.
Jordan Veldman added 10 points for M-S, his third straight game scoring in double figures.
Kobe Essien had a team-high six rebounds for M-S. Kamphaus had five boards.
M-S led, 25-16, after one quarter.
The Bulldogs return to action in the Large School bracket at the State Farm Classic with a 5 p.m. game on Wednesday against Normal Community, looking to snap a two-game losing streak.
Wrestling
Five Bulldogs finished with 3-0 records for the day on Saturday, helping M-S win two of three meets at home.
M-S (9-3) overpowered Westville 66-14 and received a forfeit win over Decatur Eisenhower, which withdrew from the meet. Olney defeated M-S 42-30.
Winning all three bouts for the state-ranked Bulldogs were Braeden Heinold (120 and 126 pounds), Noah Schnepper (120 and 126), Peyton Myers (132), Logan Petro (138) and Dallas Carnell (182).
Carnell, Myers and Schnepper each registered two pins. One of Myers’ pins was posted in nine seconds.
Heinold and Petro each finished with one pin as did three other teammates: Payton Ragona (106), Gage Granadino (160) and Daniel Renshaw (195).
Renshaw had a 14-second fall and Ragona secured a pin in 56 seconds.
The Bulldogs return to action in the two-day Granite City Invitational, which starts on Friday.
