MSHS Ag Expo brings agriculture to life for students
Mahomet-Seymour agriculture and horticulture students have volunteered their time to bring the seventh annual Ag Expo to the Mahomet community on Saturday from 9 to 11 a.m.
This years’ Ag Expo promises to have a broad range of activities for community members of all ages. Visitors will be able to take a picture in the petting zoo, see the University of Illinois Bird of Prey Presentation and participate in the Tractor Pull Tournament.
Registration for the tournament begins at 9 a.m.
Students will also help visitors tie-dye an FFA t-shirt or create a Mother’s Day flower basket and card.
With a canned food donation, community members can get free popcorn and explore a real combine. The Dairy Ice Cream Truck will also be available for ice cream purchases.
The Mahomet-Seymor High Ag Supply store will also be open for their annual plant sale from 8 a.m. to noon. All proceeds from the plant sale go to student scholarships and educational resources.
In the days leading up to the Ag Expo, MSHS students set-up age appropriate, educational displays for Pre-K through second grade students to tour.
Although many of the juniors were involved in the “Footloose” musical and ACT preparation, the group developed two days of presentations that align with the elementary school Common Core standards.
Second grade students were able to sit on tractors, identify plant parts, learn about corn uses, take Ag measurements and view a calf.
Pre-K, kindergarten and first grade students rotated through stations to learn about how wool and cotton are used in clothing and the importance of the Mahomet aquifer. They also climbed on tractors, picked out Mother’s Day flowers, listened to a story and learned about plants and local birds.
