Thanksgiving gatherings come in many different shapes and sizes. For decades, the Mahomet Ministerial Alliance has given Mahomet residents the chance to gather with neighbors and friends to celebrate the year’s blessings.
“I think we are all part of the same team,” First Baptist Church Pastor Brian Romanowski said. “We are working for God’s kingdom. Working together and being united follows what Jesus talked about in John 17. One of the last things He said before he was arrested and crucified was that he prayed that we would all be one. I think in coming together and doing events like this we are showing the world that we truly are one community in Christ.”
The Mahomet Ministrial Alliance, which also helps to support the Sangamon River Music Festival and Summer Lunches at Candlewood, consists of 10 area churches. Each church plays a different role in the service, from providing music to offering scripture readings.
“The service is open to everyone. We hope people come and invite their friends, whether they go to church or not” Romanowski said. He also hopes people come and spend an hour thanking God for all the things he has done for them throughout the year.
This year’s gathering will take place at Mahomet-Seymour High School on November 22 at 6 p.m. Nikoli Falenschek from Mahomet Lutheran Church will speak at this year’s event.
Several hundred people have attended in the past. There also is an offering collected to benefit Mahomet Helping Hands. Last year’s offering raised almost $600 for the community organization. Romanowski said.
