M-S Board adopts Advanced Placement Program

The Mahomet-Seymour Board of Education voted to adopt the state-mandated Accelerated Placement Program (APP) at the June 25 board meeting.

The APP requires districts to provide advanced placement opportunities for each student to develop to his or her maximum potential.

Open to all students who demonstrate a high ability and may benefit from advanced placement, the district must provide minimum accelerated options which may include, but are not limited to, accelerating a student in a single subject, other grade-level acceleration and early entrance to kindergarten or first grade.

Students in Mahomet-Seymour Junior High and Mahomet-Seymour High School have access to advanced placement courses. Fifth-grade students at Lincoln Trail can also be placed in “high math.”

According to the adopted board policy, the district must have in place a parent/guardian notification process and assessment processes that are fair, equitable and involve multiple individuals.

The APP was signed into law on August 25, 2017 and became law effective July 1, 2018.
