The Mahomet-Seymour High School WYSE (Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering) team won the Parkland Regional, scoring 496 out of 500 points, on February 3.
The MSHS WYSE team has won the Regional Competition dating back to 2009, except in 2015 when they placed second.
WYSE is an academic challenge comprised of a series of tests that challenge students knowledge of seven subjects related to engineering. Written by teams of college and university faculty, subjects include biology, chemistry, computer science, engineering graphics, English, mathematics, and physics.
The first-place finish came on the back of individuals who excelled in their individual tests that take 40-minutes to complete.
Jessica Berkman place first in physics and second in biology. Ben Dahl placed first in English and second in chemistry.
Nick Morrow place first in math while Michal Strzebonski took second. Mrinali Kesavadas place first in biology.
Tony Cosimini placed second in English, Sanket Patel, Annie Bao, and Kaitlyn Chalfant took third in physics, chemistry and English, respectively.
The 14-member WYSE team will compete at the Eastern Illinois University Sectional on March 8.
The team hopes to advance to the State competition where they will have a chance to defend their title.
