Bulldogs to face tough bracket in State Farm Classic
Mahomet-Seymour’s boys’ basketball team finds itself in a tough bracket for the State Farm Classic, which will start at multiple Bloomington-Normal gymnasiums on Dec. 27.
Coach Chad Benedict’s Bulldogs open with Thornwood, from South Holland, at 8 p.m. on Dec. 27 at Normal West High School.
With a win, the likely second-round foe for M-S would be top-seeded (and defending champion) Wheaton Warrenville-South, which draws Plainfield South in its first tournament game.
With a first-round loss, M-S would face the loser of that game.
In either case, the second-round game will be played at Illinois Wesleyan University’s Shirk Center.
The four-day event will conclude on Dec. 30.
M-S (6-2 record) is one of the nine schools in the 16-team Large School Division with no more than two losses entering games this week.
The overall record for those teams was 69-41 as of Monday.
The other seeded teams in the Large School Division are North Lawndale (second), Joliet Central (third) and Rock Island (fourth), which is a state-ranked Class 4A team.
The Large School bracket encompasses schools that are either in Class 3A or 4A for the postseason.
Last year, M-S placed fourth at the State Farm Classic in the Large School Division.
