3 Disciplines Illinois State Championship Triathlon will come to Mahomet in September 2018
The Lake of the Woods area will serve as a host for a triathlon next fall.
Jayne Deluce, from the Champaign County Convention and Visitors Bureau, told members of the Mahomet Village Board of Trustees on Tuesday that the 3 Disciplines Illinois State Championship will be held on Sunday, Sept. 23, 2018.
“We’re happy to support it in whatever way we can,” Village President Sean Widener said. “We’re looking forward to ways to highlight Mahomet, especially through the Champaign County Visitors Bureau.
“Anything we can do to get the Village of Mahomet name out there is a positive. We’ll look for ways to put a local spin on it.”
Organizers estimate as many of 300 competitors could participate in the first year. The event is locked in for three years and Deluce said expectations are that the total number of athletes could double by the
third year.
The race will feature three separate competitions, including the Olympic distance event of a 1,000-meter swim, a 29-mile bike ride and a 10-kilometer run.
There will also be a sprint-distance event consisting of a 500-meter swim, a 14.5-mile bike ride and a 5-kilometer run.
For first-time triathletes, there’s also a super sprint with a 200-meter swim, a 10-kilometer bike ride and a one-mile run.

Deluce said the Convention and Visitors Bureau sales team made contact with officials from 3 Disciplines at a national trade show and when the representatives came to Mahomet for an on-site inspection, “they fell in love with the Lake of the Woods.”
The swimming portion of the triathlon will be held in the Lake of the Woods.
Kenny Krell, the National Events Director for 3 Disciplines said the course for the running portion of the event will be “utilizing the beautiful property inside Lake of the Woods.”
Added Krell: “This run course will be a gem, taking you around the lake, past the golf course, through the covered bridge and winding in and around the Botanical Gardens before a spectacular finish next to the lake where a party will welcome all athletes.”
The organization, 3 Disciplines, has staged triathlons for 19 years and now has events in 22 states.
