Local businesses and high school students teamed up to provide MAYC with a custom 10’x16’ storage building, which a crew of volunteers will soon move to its new home behind the MAYC clubhouse. MAYC has long needed the storage space due to the large assortment of supplies used for the Club’s two major annual fundraising events: a half-marathon & 5K race event and a barn dance & auction.
“This new building is a tremendous blessing for MAYC, as it will enable us to consolidate the storage of a huge number of items into a single convenient location, rather than in a dozen volunteers’ garages and barns all over the area,” said MAYC Executive Director Marcius Moore.
45 students in the Mahomet-Seymour High School construction classes constructed the utility shed as a class project. According to Industrial Technology Instructor Eric Andracke, “This is a wonderful opportunity for both MAYC and my construction students. They enter the course having no construction experience and learn valuable skills. Shed construction began in late August and concluded at the end of October. Students learned framing techniques, roofing, and vinyl siding installation. All construction labor for the entire project was that of the students.”
The attached photos were taken during the recent installation of the overhead door, which was donated and installed by Bankco Overhead Door Co. in Mahomet. Bankco owner Kevin McClure praised the workmanship on the shed, noting that “all the joints are well made and the door opening is perfectly straight, which makes the door installation easier and often isn’t the case with many of our projects.”
All other materials for the project were purchased from Kirchner Building Center in Mahomet, which provided the materials at a generous discount and worked with Mr. Andracke to minimize costs. The Mahomet Area Kids Endowment Foundation funded the project.

The Mahomet Area Youth Club is a Mahomet based 501(c)(3) non-profit that provides after-school and summer enrichment programming to local kids, ages 6-18. Income eligible participants have access to all MAYC programming at no cost.
