Three Mahomet-Seymour senior wrestlers qualified for the Class 2A state tournament based on their results in Saturday’s Lincoln Sectional.
David Griffet, a 285-pounder, was dominant in his weight class. He pinned all three of his sectional opponents, including a 42-second fall in the semifinals and a 41-second fall in the championship bout.
Griffet (45-6 record) has pinned five of his six postseason foes while winning regional and sectional titles.
Teammates qualifying for state were Ben Stahl (220 pounds) and David Spencer (138 pounds).
Spencer suffered a 1-0 loss in the quarterfinals, then worked his way through four wrestleback matches to place third. He was 5-1 overall at the sectional and is 46-12 for the season. In the third-place match, he earned a 13-0 decision.
Stahl (43-12 record) registered three pins — two in the first period — and placed fourth in his weight class.
Overall, M-S’ nine sectional entrants compiled a cumulative 17-15 record.
A near-miss for state was 170-pound junior Wyatt Heimann. He won twice by technical fall, but fell one win shy of advancing to state. His season record is 40-14.
Junior Kyle Johnson also won two matches at sectional. Senior Lucas Hooper (195) reached the 20-win mark with his one sectional triumph.
Other M-S sectional participants were Chance Decker (126), Boden Freeman (132) and Gage Granadino (145).
The three-day individual state tournament starts on Thursday at the UI’s State Farm Center.
