Edison shuts out Mahomet-Seymour softball in Regional championship

Mahomet-Seymour’s junior high softball season came to an end on Tuesday (Sept. 13) with just its second shutout loss of the season in 18 games.

Top-seeded Champaign Edison blanked the second-seeded Bulldogs, 10-0, in an IESA Class 3A regional championship game at Zahnd Park, in Champaign.

Addison Schulze was the lone Bulldog to reach base, collecting a single and drawing a walk.

She also suffered the pitching loss, walking no one and striking out seven.

Edison was 2-0 against M-S this season.

On Saturday (Sept. 10), Schulze’s third no-hitter of the season enabled M-S to win a regional semifinal game over Danville North Ridge,16-0, at Zahnd Park.

Schulze walked two and struck out six in her three-inning stint.

Presley Cox was one of the offensive catalysts, driving in four runs. Pfeifer Manuel delivered three RBI and Joella Snodsmith added two RBI.

Cox, Manuel and Snodsmith all managed two hits as did teammates Makenna Peterka and Margaret O’Donnell.

Cora Ummel tallied three runs. Scoring twice each were Manuel, Lilly Jones, O’Donnell, Peterka and Madisyn Morgan.

On Thursday (Sept. 8), in the quarterfinals, the Bulldogs thumped Champaign Jefferson, 16-1.

Schulze pitched a one-hitter, walking no one and fanning five batters.

Manuel, Schulze and Snodsmith all smacked two hits. Manuel, Snodsmith, Cox and Ummel knocked in two runs apiece. Jones crossed home plate three times. Scoring twice each were Snodsmith, Ummel, O’Donnell and Peyton Shelmadine.

M-S concludes the season with an 11-7 overall record following a 1-3 start to the season.

For the season, four Bulldogs who batted at least 10 times finished with .300, or better, batting averages.

Schulze was the leader with a .533 average (24 for 45). She was followed by Jones (.468), Snodsmith (.419) and Cox (.350).

Ummel knocked in a team-high 19 runs. Snodsmith was the team-leader in runs scored with 26 and also in stolen bases with 18.

Jones cracked a team-high 10 extra-base hits. Snodsmith had the most games with at least two hits (seven).

Schulze pitched 87 1/3 innings and registered 109 strikeouts and just 29 walks. She finished with an 11-6 pitching record and posted six shutouts.
