Citizen Police Academy to educate residents on law enforcement

Law enforcement offices in Champaign County, including the Mahomet Police Department want to equip local residents with an understanding of law enforcement practices through a 10-week Citizen Police Academy from April 10 to June 12.

Local officials will listen to participants’ concerns on drug use, gangs, school safety, DUI enforcement and use of firearms within their local community and ask for solutions to these problems.

Participants will receive an orientation to law enforcement and police training, crime scene investigation, firearms orientation, the judicial system, terrorism, swat and K-9 demos, traffic stops, drug enforcement, laws, DUI enforcement, community policing and use of force. They will also take a tour of the Champaign County Jail and ride-along with the local department.

Citizen Police Academy will meet at the Police Training Institute on Thursdays from 6 to 9 p.m. Graduates of the program will receive a certificate of completion.
