MSHS Girls Swimming makes strong showing at IHSA Regionals

Mahomet-Seymour swimmers scored points in six of 12 events at Saturday’s Centennial Sectional and placed ninth in a 35-team field.

The Bulldogs totaled 55 points. Meet champion Centennial amassed 189 points.

M-S finished ahead of the other three Apollo Conference schools in the sectional.

Freshman Olivia McMurry helped account for 37 of the Bulldogs’ points.

She placed sixth in the 50-yard freestyle (personal-best 26.76 seconds) and was ninth in the 100 backstroke (personal-best 1:07.28).

McMurry also anchored two relays.

She joined with Rebekah Gonzalez, Olivia Ross and Skye Rodgers for a seventh-place finish in the 200 freestyle relay (season-best 1:52.77).

The quartet of Gonzalez, Natalie Heaton, Isabella Davenport and McMurry went 12.45 seconds faster than their previous best while placing eighth in the 400 freestyle relay. Their time was 4:26.45.

M-S had two placers in diving.

Junior Carly Raver was seventh (257.55 points) and sophomore teammate Rachel Wingle was eighth (245.65).

The other M-S points came in the 200 medley relay. A foursome of Heaton, Ross, Davenport and Gonzalez teamed up to place 10th in 2:16.45.

The sectional results for the other Apollo Conference entries at Centennial were Charleston, (10th with 43 points), Mattoon (11th with 27 points) and Effingham (20th with 6 points).

One other Apollo member, Lincoln, participated in a sectional at Normal, scoring six points and ending 12th.

No M-S athletes qualified for the state meet.
