Mahomet Parks are Open to the Public

Joint Release from Champaign County Forest Preserve and Mahomet Parks and Recreation:

Guidelines are rapidly changing as it relates to COVID-19 and how it affects our lives every day. It is important to remain informed and follow the directives and guidelines as they continue to update and change.

Numerous closures have occurred in local park and recreation programs and facilities in Mahomet. These are outlined on the respective websites of the Village of Mahomet Parks and Recreation Department, mahometrecreation.com, and the Champaign County Forest Preserve District, ccfpd.org. While all gatherings, events and programs have been suspended, currently the local Mahomet parks, preserves, multipurpose pathways and trails remain open. Per the CDC guidelines, while visiting the parks social distancing is not only encouraged but expected.

“We encourage practicing social distance guidelines set forth by local, state and federal agencies, but that doesn’t necessarily mean you need to stay indoors. In fact, spending time outside is a great way to strengthen your immune system and ease the stress that we’re all feeling right now,” says Dan Waldinger, Park and Recreation Director. “Our local parks and path system are open and a great option, but even spending time in the yard, shooting hoops in the driveway or biking in your neighborhood are simple things that can positively impact your mental and physical well-being”.

“We’ve received so many positive comments from individuals who are happy to see that the Forest Preserve District trails and natural areas are open and available. We’re all feeling the need for fresh air, sunshine, and connection with nature – now more than ever,” added Mary Ellen Wuellner, executive director of the Champaign County Forest Preserve District.

It’s important to note that research shows, the exposure to nature not only makes you feel better emotionally, it contributes to your physical well-being, reducing blood pressure, heart rate, muscle tension, and the production of stress hormones.
