Men at First Baptist Church serve community

Men within the New Commandment Ministries group at the First Baptist Church have been serving those in need in the Mahomet community for a few years.

New Commandment Men’s Ministries is a national movement that seeks to help widows, single mothers, orphans, elderly and immigrants through service projects such building handicap ramps, raking leaves, plumbing or cleaning gutters.

“Whatever needs to be done, we are available and ready to do that with the guys here at the church,” Pastor Brian Romanowski said.

The First Baptist Church started with suggestions from members of the church.  Since then, projects have come by word of mouth.

“We’ve taken every opportunity we’ve had that’s in our ability to get it done in a reasonable amount of time,” he said.

Romanowski also said that he’s seen many friendships form between men within the group who did not know each other before and with those they’ve served.

“We are doing this to be the hands and feet of Jesus,” he said. “The Bible repeatedly talks about helping the widows, orphans and aliens and so we look at that and think we should be doing that.”
