Athlete of the Week: Mahomet-Seymour 8th Grade girls’ basketball

The Mahomet-Seymour Junior High eighth-grade basketball team punched their ticket to the Class 4A IESA State Tournament with a 34-24 victory over Effingham Wednesday.

The Bulldogs’ performance in the first quarter likely secured the win as they built a 13-6 lead. 

Effingham stuck with Mahomet-Seymour through the fourth quarter when Lily Bosworth and Ava Yeakel combined for 4 of 6 from the free-throw line. 

Ava Yeakel led the team with 14 points while Alivia Lews and Hannah Creel each added seven points. 

The Bulldogs will bring their 24-1 record to Riverton High School where they will play in the first round of the State finals against Lake Zurich North (24-0) at 2:30 p.m. Should Mahomet-Seymour win, they will play at 6:30.
