Mahomet Illinois Bicentennial Flag Raising Ceremony December 4

(MAHOMET, Ill, – – November 20, 2017)    The Village of Mahomet along with other communities in the state will host an Illinois Bicentennial Flag Raising Ceremony on Monday, December 4, 2017 at 12:00 p.m. at the Village of Mahomet Administration Building located at 503 E. Main Street.

Sunday, December 3, 2017, marks Illinois’ 199th birthday, as Illinois became the 21st state in the union on December 3, 1818.  The Illinois Bicentennial will be a yearlong celebration between December 3, 2017, and December 3, 2018, which will be our state’s 200th birthday. Illinois Bicentennial will honor the many ways that Illinois has influenced American history, achievement, culture, innovation, and more.  Our community encourages citizens, organizations, businesses, congregations, and cultural and education institutions to participate in the yearlong celebration.

Community leaders and residents are invited to attend and participate in the ceremony which will include a special proclamation by Mayor Sean Widener, a performance by the Mahomet-Seymour High School Chorus, and the raising of the Illinois Bicentennial flag to commemorate and kick off the yearlong celebration.  Cake and refreshments will immediately follow.

“The Bicentennial is a once-in-a-lifetime invitation to fall in love with Illinois all over again. It is an opportunity to celebrate all that has been great in our first 200 years and lay the foundation for 200 more years of growth and prosperity,” said Governor Bruce Rauner.  “Our Bicentennial will showcase Illinois’ influence on American history and culture, achievement and invention, business and art. Together, we can inspire pride in Illinois and show the world what makes this state so great.”

Village President Sean Widener also believes this Bicentennial is a great opportunity to renew pride in our state.  “We encourage our citizens to join the community as we celebrate the people, places, and moments that have made Illinois great,” said Widener.
