M-S Soccer ends in deadlock with Mount Zion

By Fred Kroner

The scoreless streak for the Mahomet-Seymour boys’ soccer defense ended on Saturday (March 20), but the Bulldogs were able to avoid a loss in an Apollo Conference match at home against unbeaten Mount Zion.

The game ended in a 2-2 deadlock. M-S trailed 2-0.

“Mount Zion was able to scrape out two goals on three shots in the first half,” M-S coach Jeremy Davis said. “While the Bulldogs were able to defend the first shots both times, Mount Zion was able to crash the goal on the rebounds and put both by the keeper.”

The Bulldogs cut their deficit in half by intermission.

“After falling behind, seniors Nate Lundstrom and Logan Woodward both moved to a more aggressive position in the formation and were able to be difference-makers,” Davis said. “Before the end of the first half, Lundstrom was able to find Eli Warren to close the gap to 2-1.”

M-S outshot Mount Zion,10-7. Goalkeeper Keagon Ashby had five saves.

“While Mount Zion had the better half to start the game, Mahomet adjusted and was able to control play in the second half,” Davis said. “They continued to pressure Mount Zion in the attacking third.

“Eventually, Mount Zion broke as Logan Woodward picked up a clearance, beat the defense, and played it into the back of the net to tie the game up at 2-2.”

The Bulldogs (2-0-2) will have Senior Night on Tuesday (March 23) against Taylorville. It is earlier than normal in an effort to avoid the uncertainty of a COVID-19 shortened season.
