DeAngelo Hughey leads Mahomet-Seymour at Apollo Conference Invitational

DeAngelo Hughey recorded three of the 12 top-six finishes for Mahomet-Seymour on Saturday (March 11) in the Apollo Conference Indoor Boys’ Track and Field Invitational at Mount Zion.

Hughey was the 60-meter runner-up (7.29 seconds).

He was also part of two high-placing relays. He helped the 800-meter relay to a runner-up finish in a season-best 1 minute, 37.04 seconds. He teamed up with Jayvon Irwin, Cole Marshall and Travis Hoffman.

Hughey ran with a different set of teammates in the 1,600-meter relay, which placed fourth in 3:47.16. He was joined by Joshua Franklin, Parker Wilkins and Alex O’Brian. Hughey (52.9 seconds) and Franklin (56.1 seconds) had the quickest 400-meter splits.

Three other M-S athletes placed second in an individual event.

Hayden Grotelueschen was the runner-up in the 3,200 meters in 10:14.69. Robert Byron was second in the shot put (43 feet, 8 inches) and Ty Clark placed in the second spot in the pole vault (season-best 13 feet, 5 inches).

Franklin ran third in the 400 meters (season-best 55.49 seconds).

Taking fourth place for the Bulldogs were Ethan Ramirez (1,600-meter run in a season-best 4:46.33), Alex Carpenter (pole vault with a season-best 12 feet, 7 inches) and Marshall (long jump with a season-best 20 feet, 5 inches).

Ben Wallace wound up fifth in the 3,200-meter run (season-best 10:54.33).

The Bulldogs’ 3,200-meter relay captured sixth place in 9:22.80. Sharing the baton were Ramirez, Grant Smysor, Ethan Peterka and Colin Johnson. Ramirez had the group’s fastest 800-meter split (2:14.3).

In the 13-team meet, the Bulldogs amassed 77 points and placed second. Meet champion Mount Zion totaled 178 ½ points.

Fourteen other M-S athletes registered season-best marks, including six in the 1,600 meters: Auggie Gaudio (10th in 4:59.39), Lukas Carey (13th in 5:01.29), Kaleb Kasper (19th in 5:04.78), Corban McMinn (26th in 5:26.28), Gavin Fan (28th in 5:30.81) and Henry Carpenter (29th in 5:32.05).

Ryken Kirby (29th in 7.79 seconds) and O’Brian (38th in 7.96 seconds) recorded their top 60-meter times.

Joel Briones (22nd in 28.01 seconds) ran his best in the 200 meters. In the 400 meters, Wilkins hit a season-best 57.98 seconds.

The other Bulldog runner who raced to a top time for the season was Colin Johnson (20th in 2:30.65).

Field event performers who registered their top marks were Jackson Davis (10th in the pole vault at 9 feet, 1 inch), Hoffman (10th in the long jump at 19 feet, 1 inch) and Vance Clark (30th in the shot put at 29 feet, 9 inches).

M-S returns to action on Thursday (March 16) in the Pontiac Indoor Invitational at Illinois Wesleyan University, in Bloomington.
