Mahomet-Seymour Graduation moved to July 10

Mahomet-Seymour High School’s Principal Chad Benedict announced Friday that the Class of 2020 graduation is postponed.

Benedict said that the district has worked with Krannert to secure July 10 as the new ceremony date.

“There was much time, thought and discussion that went into this decision and there are multiple things to consider,” Benedict said. “At the end there are two factors that drove this decision:

“The first is the safety of our students, families and community members. The health of all our stakeholders has been the number one priority of the district since the start of the pandemic. With the current information that we have, bringing a large group of people together for graduation does not support this priority.

“The second factor in this was proper planning. Graduation is an important milestone for all of our students, and we wanted to provide a positive experience for our seniors. They deserve that.

“There is a great deal of work that goes on behind the scenes to make that happen. With so many things uncertain right now it was becoming hard for us to plan and know how to provide that experience and what everybody is used to and what our seniors deserve.”

Benedict said that if the University of Illinois decides to keep its facilities closed or if residents cannot gather in large groups the district will adjust as information becomes available.

He said that seniors should expect an email early next week.
