Mt. Zion tops Mahomet-Seymour in Homecoming game

Unbeaten Mount Zion scored the first 43 points Friday night, creating a running clock, and went on to thump the Bulldogs 43-8 in Mahomet-Seymour’s homecoming game at Frank Dutton Field.

The lone M-S points came in the final 4 minutes on an 18-yard interception return by Gage Granadino. Skyler Yancy converted the two-point conversion.

The points scored by Granadino and Yancy were their first ones of the season.

Yancy posted a team-high seven tackles. Colton Morris had six stops and Dallas Carnell had three. They were the only Bulldogs with more than two tackles.

Offensively, Mount Zion held a 350-128 edge in total yards.

Braden Finch completed 8 of 14 passes for 32 yards. No completion was for more than nine yards.

Noah Crowley hauled in three passes for 21 yards. Clay Hubble had two receptions for two yards.

Hubble was the team’s top rusher, generating 64 yards on 14 attempts. Finch gained 20 yards on 10 tries. As a team, M-S managed 94 rushing yards on 34 carries.

Cole Hubble returned two kickoffs for 48 yards.

M-S is 1-3 in Apollo Conference games. All three league losses are to opponents with 5-0 season records: Effingham, Taylorville and Mount Zion.

Defensively, Mahomet-Seymour is allowing an average of 35.2 points per game.

The Bulldogs are 1-4 overall and must win each of its final five games to have a shot at the postseason playoffs. M-S returns to action on Friday at home against Lincoln (1-4), which picked up its first win on Friday, 31-28 over Collinsville.
