Champaign County Board to discuss property tax delay

The Champaign County Board will discuss a delay in property taxes on April 23, according to District 1 board member Jim Goss.

Goss asked for constituents’ opinions on the “Jim Goss for Champaign County Board 1” Facebook page early Monday.

“What are your thoughts on delaying property taxes?” he wrote. “This month at our County Board meeting we will be discussing this item. I want to include your feedback.”

Goss also recognized that property taxes are part of the funding local governments need to function.

“Our taxing bodies typically need this cash flow so they can pay employees, complete road projects, educate children, etc.,” he wrote. “Delaying it has implications for both the taxpayer and taxing body.”

Property taxes account for 58-percent of the Mahomet-Seymour School District revenues and 32.5-percent of the revenues for the Village of Mahomet. The Cornbelt Fire Protection District revenues relies on 95-percent of property tax funds while the Mahomet Public Library’s revenue are comprised of 85-89-percent of property taxes.

The first installment of property taxes is typically due June 1.

John Bambenek of Champaign started a petition drive asking the County board to approve a 90-day delay on property-tax collection.

Sangamon, St. Clair and Kane counties have already taken similar measures.

The Kane County Board will grant a 30-day waiver of interest penalty for the first installment of property taxes. The first installment, that is due on June 1, 2020, will be accepted without late penalty interest if payment is made on or before July 1, 2020.

St. Clair, who usually mails its property tax bills in May, will instead mail them on June 15 in an effort to help those struggling financially due to the coronavirus. First and second installment due dates are tentatively scheduled to be extended until July 30 and Sept. 30.

Sangamon County mails property tax bills in May and the first installment is due by June 12. In 2020, the first installment of property tax is due Sept. 12 with no interest penalties until September.
