The Illinois Hillbillies
We-e-e-ll Doggies! Jud Clumpett has struck it rich!! His mud farm in Rainfall, Kansas has yielded a vein of the purest silica sand ever discovered. Computer giant company Chips Ahoy has already given Jud $3 million earnest money for his piddly farm, with the anticipation of $2 billion more to come. Jud wasted no time loading up the kinfolk (Juthro, Grammy, and Nellie Mae) and heading off to a better life in Chicago. But Juthro was reading the road map, and they took a wrong turn off I-80. They finally stopped in Urbana to ask directions and cash the check at Busey Bank. Bank President Gordon Clydesdale and his faithful secretary, Miss Jane Harriday, knew an opportunity when they saw one.
Tonight’s soiree is to introduce the Clumpetts to the good folks around here and convince them to settle here (and to settle their considerable future assets in Mr. Clydesdale’s bank). After a hardscrabble lifetime in the mudflats of Kansas, how will they react to being wealthy, having a beautiful home, and luxuries beyond their dreams? Will it affect their simple values and noble character? Will the love of money take root in the fertile soil of their unblemished hearts? Are their hearts and minds really that pure? Or will others seek to fleece these seeming simpletons of their riches?
These simple folks from a muddy patch of ground in Kansas are about to come face to face with a whole passel of unpleasant surprises tonight. And before the evening is over, the Clumpetts’ tradition of bestowing a heapin’ helpin’ of hospitality will turn into open hostility. Murder, that is. Whatever happens, you can be sure that at least one of these folks won’t be joining us again right here next week.
