Fittek opens doors to community this weekend

Since the early 1990’s Fittek has been more than just a place to walk on a treadmill. From the very beginning, owner Linn Schweig developed a professional team focused on providing individualized and group training that focused on all aspects of clients’ health.

Now, almost 25 years later, Fittek continues reach out to clients on an individual level through individualized training, group strength training and posture alignment therapy. Schweig not only wants to highlight the gym, but also the services provided at Fittek during an open house on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“Now that kids are settled at school, fall sports are winding down and yard work is finishing for the season, people can start thinking about themselves,” she said.

Guests and can sign up to receive a special gym rate until June 2015. Fittek will donate $5 to Mahomet Helping Hands for each new gym membership from the Open House. They will also be collecting donations of outerwear and nonperishable foods for the pantry during the open house.

Fittek will highlight high intensity interval training at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Schweig said while high intensity training has become popular over recent years, it is something the Fittek staff has always offered their clientele.

Open house guests will also be able to sign up for a free Introduction to Weight Lifting class.

“Many people think walking, running, or cycling is all they need,” Schweig said. “Research rates weightlifting of equal importance. One researcher stated that aerobic exercise ‘saves your life’ but strength training ‘makes it worth living.’  In other words, strengthen heart function but also work the muscles so you can perform your activities.”

She also added that weightlifting is beneficial for weight loss, reducing blood pressure and improving blood lipid profiles.

Schweig also became an Egoscue certified posture therapist as well as an ACSM certified Health Fitness Specialist when she could no longer run because of intense back pain. After an evaluation and therapy, Schweig can now perform any activity she wants.

On Saturday, Schweig will perform free posture evaluations from 11 a.m. to noon for Fittek guests. She said from standing posture, she can begin to understand why an individual might have chronic pain or movement limitations.

“When you can see or feel imbalances in the body, you start thinking maybe there’s something I can do about it,” she said. “Posture therapists take a client on the road to discover how getting the muscles to change the position of the body can relieve most soft tissue and joint pain without medication, surgery or manipulation.”

Fittek is located at 903 S. Sunny Acres Road.
