Bulldogs tie school record for wins in home finale

Mahomet-Seymour’s baseball team tied its school record for wins in a season on Thursday (May 18) in its regular-season home-finale, an 11-5 triumph over Bloomington.

M-S led, 10-0, after four innings.

Mason Orton (6-0) pitched five innings, scattering three hits, while walking four and striking out nine hitters. Alex McHale threw the last two innings, permitting one hit and one walk to go with two strikeouts.

McHale and Carter Selk had similar success at the plate. Each Bulldog had a double and a home run.

Selk scored four runs, stole three bases and knocked in two runs. McHale tallied three runs and drove in one. He finished with three hits.

Cade Starrick also delivered two hits and three RBI. Blake Wolters crossed home plate twice and swiped three bases.

M-S (29-5) returns to action on Wednesday (May 24) in a Class 3A regional semifinal game at home. The third-seeded Bulldogs will take on sixth-seeded Danville at 5 p.m., with the winner advancing to the Saturday (May 27) 2 p.m. regional title game at M-S.

Mahomet-Seymour Boys’ Tennis

Mahomet-Seymour’s boys’ tennis season came to an end on Friday (May 19) in the first round of the Danville Sectional.

Both of the Bulldogs entries in singles and in doubles bowed out in the opening round. Two of the losses were to seeded opponents who later qualified for state.

M-S’ doubles team of Jacob Atteberry and Hayden Mitchell drew the No. 1 seed at the sectional, Champaign Central’s Elliot Gulley and Wade Schacht, and dropped a 6-0, 6-0 decision. Sectional champions Gulley and Schacht are 20-7 for the season.

In singles, Bulldog Quade Bristle was ousted by No. 2 seed Aryan Sachdev, from Urbana Uni High, 6-0, 6-0. Sachdev, who finished third at the sectional has a 13-5 season record.

The Bulldogs’ other doubles entry, Lucas Raquel and Jack Louis dropped a hard-fought 6-3, 6-1 decision to Paris’ Aidan Creek and Harris Romero.

The other M-S representative at sectional was Leif Olson in singles. He was eliminated by fifth seed Mason Miao, from Urbana Uni High, 6-0, 6-0. Miao has a 10-2 season record.

The Bulldogs ended the year 2-4 in dual meets.

Atterberry (No. 1) and Caleb Bushue (No. 6) were the team leaders in wins in singles, with three apiece.

Champaign Central advanced all four of its sectional entries to state and won the team title with 26 points.
