M-S wrestling goes undefeated in Apollo Conference

Mahomet-Seymour’s wrestling team completed a sweep of Apollo Conference opponents and moved to within reach of a school record for dual-meet wins in a season after concluding the regular season on Thursday (Jan. 27) with two wins at home.

M-S shutout Taylorville, 78-0, and then overpowered Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley/Fisher, 66-12.

The Bulldogs win the Apollo title with an unblemished league mark of 7-0. Overall, M-S is 26-3.

The school record for single-season ual-meet wins is 27 set by the 1987-88 team. If M-S gets into the IHSA dual-meet series, it would have a chance to tie and surpass the record.

Four Bulldogs went 2-0 on Thursday without receiving a forfeit win: Caden Hatton (113 pounds) with pins in 1:41 and 1:05; Camden Heinold (120 pounds) with a pin in 1:13 and a 15-10 decision; Gage Decker (132 pounds) with pins in 1:55 and 2:49 and Logan Petro (145 pounds) with decisions 15-2 and 15-0.

Teammates who were 2-0 with one pin and one forfeit win were: Lukas Alstetter (106 pounds) with a pin in 1:08; Braedon Heinold (152 pounds) with a pin in 1:03; Colton Crowley (220 pounds) with a pin in 3:05 and Camden Harms (285 pounds) with a pin in 2:47.

Mateo Casillas (195 pounds) picked up a forfeit win a 19-2 technical fall. Reese Wilson (126 pounds) won his only bout by technical fall.Tallen Pawlak (138 pounds) was a 17-9 winner in his only match. Jacob Dobbins (1670 pounds) had a forfeit win and an 11-3 decision.

Casillas is 44-1 for the season with 40 consecutive wins.

In the two matches, M-S’ cumulative record was 26-2 with 10 wins by forfeit, nine wins by pin, three by technical fall; three by major decision and one by regular decision.

M-S returns to action on Saturday (Feb. 5) at home when it hosts a Class 2A IHSA regional tournament. First-round matches will start on three mats at 9 a.m.

Joining M-S in the field are Bloomington, Centennial, Champaign Central, Danville, Lincoln, Normal West and Urbana.
